It would be really nice to be able to know, quantitatively, where all the time goes during build.

Right now I'm prepping version 0.7 for release. This has initiated an hilarious all-singing all-dancing three-ring yak-shaving party. First make distcheck failed because make check failed (and I didn't know make distcheck actually required make check to pass in the first place). At that point make check was failing because fontlint (as already well known) demands strict adherance to rules that FontForge is incapable of complying with. Then I discovered that fontlint (which I hadn't known before) is in fact a FontForge script, and thus can be replaced with a homegrown script to serve the same purpose, but better. Of course, a better fontlint would also be important for other users of fontlint, so that became a proposed contribution to FontForge instead of something specific to Tsukurimashou. But then someone else reading my bug report complained that fontlint's shebang pointed at the wrong absolute path to the interpreter, and wanted fontlint's shebang to be changed to use a path relative to the current directory (!), which is reported to work on a Mac. That's probably not what FontForge should do cross-platform, but I ended up being asked to look into it and make it right. And then I found that FontForge's script interpreter implodes when given two-dimensional arrays. Long-term that will need to be fixed too; short-term I redesigned the fontlint replacement to only use one-dimensional arrays. But even with the fontlint replacement up and running, make distcheck still fails during make check, and the options I need to pass to the fontlint replacement to let it pass so I can build a distribution are a fair bit looser than anything I want to have as the default for manually-invoked make check. Figuring out DISTCHECK_CONFIGURE_OPTIONS and related mechanisms in Autotools has required a fair bit of trial and error, and at this point the information flow still isn't quite right. I also observe that make check often seems to result in apparently-unnecessary rebuilding of Makefiles and everything that depends on them, running to at least an hour of wall time in an all-stops-out configuration before it can even start the actual tests. And for testing an actual release candidate, I do need to be building with all optional features enabled.

The important observation is that the process is more painful than it should be because I'm doing a lot of large builds and they take a long time. Furthermore, I don't know exactly *where* the builds are taking a long time. Building dependencies seems like a lot of work; building Postscript subfonts seems like a lot of work; assembling SFD and OTF fonts seems like a lot of work; kerning seems like a lot of work; and building proofs seems like a lot of work. But which of those actually are the biggest factors in the overall total? Is it 20/20/20/20/20, or 10/10/60/10/10? Which one should I concentrate on if I want to make the build faster? It would be really nice to have a clearer picture of the build time consumption than just "it seems pretty slow." We could use a profiler that will operate on the coarse level of the entire build.

I think the best way to implement profiling at this level is to wrap the shell used by Make. I'd really like to know the start and end time of every recipe Make executes; but doing that seems like it would require breaking into and instrumenting Make itself, which is probably a losing game. Replacing the shell with a wrapper (using the SHELL= setting in every Makefile) is much less intrusive and would work at nearly the same abstraction level. I envision the wrapper as a C program, which could be packaged as a Tsukurimashou parasite, that would become the target of the SHELL= setting. When executed, it would write a "start" line to a log file, execute the actual shell, and then write an "end" line to the log file, passing command line arguments and return values back and forth appropriately. It might also save its own process ID in an environment variable passed to children, and include the value of that variable received from the parent in the log lines, so that from the log we could recover the tree structure of invocations of the wrapper. Possibly also save a user-defined environment variable to allow for a larger-scale tree structure (for instance, of Make recipes) if the system hosting it is set up for that. Then external utilities can scan the log file and recover timing information, even in complicated builds that involve multiple levels of recursive parallel Makes.

A tool to do this would of course be useful for systems other than Tsukurimashou, so it should be built to be as general as possible.

The katakana ル and レ (and possibly a few other things derived from them) have some weirdness at the lower left as, creating an ink-trap-like feature. This part should be re-done to better work with current styling code.

The current project Web site bills this project as "Tsukurimashou and IDSgrep." Inasmuch as some of our other parasite packages have significant lives of their own - in particular, OCR, which accounts for a large majority of downloads from the project - and there are now too many of them to list in the title and describe in detail on the front page, we should have a page for each parasite. These pages should become the preferred link targets for the redirects from Ansuz, etc.

FontForge's fontlint utility, which is currently the basis of our test suite, has some problems. While trying to do final packaging on Tsukurimashou 0.7, I discovered A. that in the not-absolutely-latest Git version of FontForge I was using, fontlint fails unconditionally because of a bug in FontForge's reporting of its own version (already fixed by FontForge developers in their latest version), and B. fontlint is a FontForge native script, implying that the information it reports is available to native scripts after all, albeit through an inadequately-documented interface. This creates the possibility of writing our own fontlint replacement that will actually behave the way we'd like it to, instead of trying to muddle through with FontForge's defaults. I'm throwing this in as a last-minute requirement for 0.7 because it's that or disable the use of fontlint to make it pass make distcheck before the release; and having a fontlintesque thing that really worked well would be valuable not only for Tsukurimashou and most of its parasites, but also as a contribution to FontForge general development.

It would be nice to have the kanji needed to spell common phrases and titles from pop culture, in particular 涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱. Those are fun kanji to design, too.

The macro code imported from the METATYPE1 project relies heavily on being able to process the string name of a glyph as METATYPE-language token sequence. This has a number of undesirable consequences. In particular, in a name like "uni4E01", the parser interprets that as four tokens: string "uni", integer four, string "E", integer one. It then converts the token sequence back into a string, namely "uni4E1" (note the zero has disappeared) and writes that into the Postscript file as the name of the glyph. Tsukurimashou's current code proceeds to rename the glyph to "uni4E01", but it would be better not to have to do that. Another problem occurred with a glyph named "uni1100.l2", which was parsed in a context where "l" was a "spark" in METAFONT syntax; we worked around that by changing it to "uni1100.lj2", but again it would be better not to have to. It appears that near-future enhancements in Metapost may have it trying to parse floating point numbers in scientific notation, so that "4E01" would end up parsed as the floating point number four times ten to the first power, whose canonical string representation is probably "40".

An ideal solution from our point of view might be to rewrite the relevant macros in fntbase.mp to eliminate the blind parsing of glyph names as suffixes. That's not going to be trivial, however.

A first cut of a solution has been checked in. We save the original string and pass that through to the PostScript; we also modify it by inserting an underscore before every character (the former code had inserted one underscore before the whole thing in this context) and parse that for tokens. Making the change proved a little complicated because the assumption of "insert one underscore before parsing" had been baked into a number of different macros throughout the file. The current code no longer will accept a suffix passed in as an argument - only a string. This issue ties into some undocumented METATYPE1 infrastructure that we don't seem to be using - for instance, there was evidently a mechanism already for manually specifying a PostScript name to differ from the name used internally for parsing as tokens, and there are some forward and backward character code/name lookup tables being maintained that don't look necessary. Ideally, this would all be cleaned up to not parse glyph names as suffixes at all; but maybe it's best to leave that to the Poles. The current code seems to work pretty well for our purposes; leaving the bug open as a reminder to watch future Metapost and METATYPE1 development.

Allow specification on the command line of a file that in some way lists kanji (EIDS heads), so that "is on the list" becomes available as a matching predicate. The killer app: I'd like to be able to search KanjiVG or CHISE for kanji that are not in Tsukurimashou but are lr or tb combinations of kanji in Tsukurimashou.

Detailed proposal: one or more command-line options to specify user-defined matching predicates. These might include: specify a literal string in EIDS match-pattern syntax (matches anything the string does); specify a text file name and match any non-blank character in the file, or any line; specify a font file (OTF format, other?) and match any character that is defined in the font. New matching operator, unary .user. or .#. (with sugary brackets), which looks at the head of its child as a decimal number (considered equal to 1 if not otherwise valid), and takes that as the 1-based index into the list of user-defined matching predicates that have been specified. Using the head of the child means that in the common case of no more than nine user-defined predicates, we can use simple "#1", "#2", "#3" syntax which looks like argument-substitution in such languages as TeX.

Example of use:

idsgrep --user-predicate Tsukurimashou.otf -dkanjivg '&!#1|[lr]#1#1[tb]#1#1'

(beware editing this - the Wiki software here will garble it if not carefully escaped with extra exclamation points)

That would mean "match in KanjiVG dictionary, any kanji not in the font file, where the kanji is either an [lr] or a [tb] combination of two kanji that are in the font file." Such a query would return kanji that might easily be added to the font.

Details

At present, almost all of the alphabet is using default locations for accent anchors in the GPOS table. As a result, some accented letters don't really look very good. We should review all the anchor locations for the mainline Latin alphabet and make them as good as reasonably possible, with special attention to distinguishing different accent classes. Vowels are most important because of usage, but ideally this would apply to all letters.

Details

The dependency calculation doesn't work well when a new .mp file is created; it often fails to trigger a re-build of makefile-pfb.inc, so that the next few builds fail. Several ad-hoc fix attempts have been applied, but it's tricky to debug them because if makefile-pfb is ever rebuilt, then the immediate symptoms vanish even if the problem is not really fixed. This requires more careful examination to get it really right.

Recent work on GSUB features has created much of the support for accented small caps. All accented letters appearing in "small caps" style will be constructed using GPOS even if originally entered using precomposed code points. Therefore appropriate GPOS data (accent anchors) for small caps needs to be created. At present, none exists and it's all going to defaults for lowercase, which look bad.

The code that determines when to attach a serif includes a fuzzy-match to handle endpoints whose t-values vary from style to style and might not be the same as the serif's specified index value. In some cases, notably at the upper left of the lowercase Latin "y" in Mincho, this detects more than one match for the same serif, causing the serif to appear more than once. There's currently an independent Genjimon package that was manually created as an extract from an earlier version of Tsukurimashou (before the current build system was in place). It doesn't, and should, integrate with the Tsukurimashou build system. This will mean some careful design, because the Genjimon fonts currently build as TTFs whereas the rest of the project builds as OTFs. Also some thought needed as to whether we want Genjimon to continue to be distributable as a separate package in itself.

Sometimes when a stroke path goes through a tight but smooth (not a corner) bend, with radius comparable to the radius of the pen, the stroking code inherited from METATYPE1 behaves badly. A good example of this is in the current appearance of U+8A66 試 in Tsukurimashou Kaku. This is a case where the change in direction of the curve (which causes the active point on the pen outline to move) outstrips the actual motion of the pen, so that the active point on the envelope briefly moves backwards. In a correct calcuation, this would cause a sharp corner in the envelope even though no sharp corner exists in the pen_stroke input. The actual code doesn't create the sharp corner that should exist; instead the envelope path whips around in a way that creates what looks like an "ink trap" in the character outline. This is one of several issues I discussed with Shriramana Sharma in a mailing list thread here: http://tug.org/pipermail/metapost/2012-August/002680.html and he cites a paper by Karel Píška which also points them out, here: http://www-hep2.fzu.cz/~piska/TUG2004/piskatb2.pdf

As I said in that thread, I doubt that a fully automated solution is possible. However, it should at least be possible in the context of Tsukurimashou's stroke mechanism to detect when a curve goes through a curve with a large change in direction combined with a small radius, and in such a case to automatically insert an extra node. That should tend to duplicate what the manual solution would do - force MT1's pen_stroke to interpolate at more points, creating a loop in the computed envelope which will be snipped out later by our existing FontForge processing. This should eliminate the worst of the visible problems.

Task: implement this far enough to test whether it will be workable, and if so, implement it the rest of the way.

Wrote code to compute inflection points analytically. This turns out to be not too bad once one thinks through the math carefully. An inflection point happens where the cross product of the first and second derivatives of the curve comes out to zero; in the case of a cubic spline segment, that cross product is a quadratic in the parameter. So we do a couple of matrix multiplies to find the coefficients of the quadratic, solve the quadratic, and the result is the parameter values of the inflection points. Those feed into the same code mentioned above for splitting tight curves. It's necessary to watch out for degenerecies, arithmetic overflows, and the consequences of rounding error; and the result of splitting at inflection points often seems to trigger division by zero in the tight-curve logic, so that had to be handled and still could be improved. But I'm closing the ticket now because the original issue, if not perfectly solved, is much improved and good enough for now. My hope is that this code will be usable by other projects, too.

The bundled MetaType1 code in fntbase.mp contains a lot of stuff not appropriate to Tsukurimashou: Polish-language comments, references to illustrations we don't have, and support code for TFM generation, hinting, and MetaFont-style proof generation. IDSgrep assumes UTF-8 throughout. When multiple files are specified, so that output lines are to be prefixed with the filenames enclosed in colons, idsgrep runs the filenames through its escaping code, in order to make sure that the result will be valid EIDS syntax. (In particular, literal colons in the filenames have to be escaped.) This is a problem if running on a non-UTF-8 host, where the filenames might possibly contain forbidden bytes.

We should figure out what happens in this case, and (harder) what SHOULD happen. If possible, it would be preferable to be able to keep the current "we are blind to locales" policy; but without knowing the locale, it's probably not going to be possible to translate the filenames to Unicode in a way that will survive a round trip.

Currently, if the -d option's glob search matches nothing, idsgrep will search the empty set of dictionaries, find no matches, give no output, and return success. That may be confusing for users who entered a bad glob by mistake; it would be preferable to give an error saying no dictionaries were searched, and an unsuccessful return value. Doing so arguably violates the Unix principle of following a simple behaviour exactly and trusting the user to be right, but given that -d is a user-convenience feature (and somewhat nondeterministic because it depends on what was installed) anyway, I think it's justifiable. Users who want really really consistent Unix-like behaviour should be specifying their dictionary files directly instead of with -d anyway.

At present, when a match is detected IDSgrep will write out the string of input bytes that was parsed to create the tree that matched. Since there are multiple ways to encode the same tree as valid EIDS, the input string might not be the one we really want on output. Planned feature is to offer a choice of modes including the current behaviour and also a few different ways of encoding the tree itself into a newly-generated, more canonical, EIDS form.

It seems likely that IDSgrep's parser may permit some 4-byte UTF-8 sequences that encode code points outside the Unicode range. This should be checked, and corrected if it is the case.

Details

The CHISE project, www.chise.org, offers a full-coverage IDS dictionary that looks like it could be converted to work with IDSgrep very easily. It's also free software under a license compatible with ours (GPL2+) and so it seems like the thing to do is bundle it.
