The data we need for compiling the kanji chart and so on could be read from the Unihan database instead of KANJIDIC. Create a translator and add code to the build system to allow it to use either of the two.
This is not going to be possible. It turns out that Unihan's "kGradeLevel" field is actually the Hong Kongese, not Japanese, grade level, and Japanese grade level is not in Unihan at all. :-(
